Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal – Overview
Awarded for four consecutive years of service in the Selected Marine Corps Reserve. The Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal is worn after the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal and before the Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal.
The Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal was established by the Secretary of the Navy on February 19, 1939 as the Fleet Marine Corps Reserve Medal. Later, the name was changed to the Organized Marine Corps Reserve Medal and finally to its current designation in the late 1980’s. The medal is awarded to members of the Marine Corps Reserve who, subsequent to July 1, 1925, and prior to April 24, 1961, attended 80 percent of all scheduled drills during a four year period. Since April 24, 1961, the attendance criteria was raised to 90 percent.
The Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal was designed by the United States Mint. The medal is a circular bronze disc with two walking figures. The figure in the foreground is wearing a pre-World War II uniform and the other is wearing civilian clothes. Above the figures is the raised circular inscription, “MARINE CORPS RESERVE” and below the figures is the inscription, “FOR SERVICE.” The reverse of the medal is identical to the that of the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with the raised inscription, “FIDELITY – ZEAL – OBEDIENCE” centered in between two concentric raised circles and with room in the center to inscribe the recipient’s name. The ribbon is gold and has a red center stripe with narrow border stripes of blue, white and red. Additional awards are denoted by three-sixteenth bronze stars.
