GWOTNew Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and Service Medal Design!

The Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal have been redesigned by the Institute of Heraldry. The new military medals are slightly smaller in diameter from the original medals and the reverse of the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal have been restruck to leave off the word “medal”. The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal has the word “Medal” removed from the front of the medal. See comparison of the old medals to the new ones below.

Do I need to replace my Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal? Does this mean that your old “Global War on Terrorism medal” needs to be replaced? No! Your original medal is still official and from my point of view you should keep it, especially if it’s mounted for wear. If you overlay the new medals over the old medals you will see they are slightly smaller, i.e the same size as the Vietnam Service medal or the National Defense Service Medal. I would keep and wear the the more unique first strike version. There are no plans to require changing your medals to the new version.

Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal’s Biggest Change

The major change is the removal of the word “medal” on the reverse of the Global War on

    To whom it may concern,

The Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal on the reverse now states "Global War on Terrorism Expeditions" instead of "Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary" which sounded awful and looks awful as shown in your picture. How do I know?

I contacted The Institute of Heraldry in June of 2008 and asked them to reconsider having the term "Expeditionary" on the reverse of the GWOT-E Medal. I stated that grammatically and historically that it was wrong to just leave it at "Expeditionary". I gave them the idea "Expeditions" as I showed them the example of the Navy Expeditionary Medal as well as the Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal.

While I did not make the decision to change from just "Expeditionary" to "Expeditions", I'm sure glad they at least listened to me…and glad TIOH made the right call.

    The TIOH E-mail to me:

    Classification: UNCLASSIFIED

    Caveats: NONE

    Robert,

I have discussed your concerns regarding the naming of the GWOT Expeditionary medal with the Institute of Heraldry's Director, Charles Mugno. While no decision has been made about renaming the medal, the matter is under advisement. As there is a large stock of this particular medal in government warehouses, it will be several years before new medal is available.

Thanks for contacting the Institute of Heraldry.
